annual Youth in Germany survey shows big swing to the right of voters under 30 | Eastern NC Now

The annual large scale Youth in Germany survey for 2023 has shown a big swing to the right among German voters under 30.   The just released survey found the populist / nationalist anti-immigration Alternativ fur Deutschland (AfD) as the most popular party among young voters, with the traditional conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) second.  Support for the AfD has doubled among young voters since 2022.   Support for the parties in the current left / liberal national government has cratered since last year's survey.

"We can speak of a clear shift to the right among the young population" says the study's summary.  "The AfD has clearly succeeded in presenting itself as a protest party for the traffic lights [i.e. the current government]  and as a problem solver for current concerns"  The current national government is called the "traffic light coalition" due to the party colors, red for the Social Democrats, yellow for the Free Democrats, and green for the Green Party.
