As often develops, it features an establishment incumbent, a fill-in after the chairman elected at the last convention resigned, opposed by a more conservative grassroots party activist.  Incumbent Jason Simmons was handpicked by previous chairman Michael Whatley, who had himself been handpicked for chairman by RINO Senator Thom Tillis. and maneuvered into the spot.   He is being challenged by Iredell County GOP activist Brooke McGowan.  Simmons at a previous point in his career worked for uber-RINO Mitt Romney but has never held a grassroots party office in North Carolina.
