Final count shows big swing to the right in Portugal - both trad and populist right | Eastern NC Now

while the left craters

Portugal's snap parliamentary election has seen a large swing to the right, including both the traditional right and the populist nationalist anti-immigration right, while parties of both the traditional left and far left cratered.  While the vote inside Portugal and its island territories was counted election night, overseas votes have just been tallied for a final result.

The governing Democratic Alliance, a coalition of three traditional conservative parties came in first winning 91 seats in the 230 seat parliament, a gain of 11.  In second place was the populist nationalist anti-immigration Chega (Enough!) Party which won 60 seats, a gain of 10.  The Liberal Initiative, a "classical liberal" small government party with libertarian tendencies, ran fourth with 9 seats, a gain of 1.

On the left, the traditional leftwing Socialist Party slumped down to third place with 58 seats, a loss of 20.  Prior to the 2024 snap election, the Socialists had been in first place with an absolute majority in parliament.  The three parties of the far left won a total of 10 seats between them, a net loss of 3.

A regionalist party from the island of Madeira won a seat for the  first time and an animal rights party kept its one seat.

Illegal immigration has become as huge an issue in Europe as it is in America even though the globalist elites are still out of touch with the people on it, sort of like here. It was only a few years ago that Chega had only one seat in the Portugeese parliament, and now they are the second largest party.
