How important is health care to you? | Eastern North Carolina Now

Publisher's Note: This article originally appeared in the Beaufort Observer.

Do you know what to expect in the future? Can you afford to just take it for granted that it will be there when you need it?

What if the people in northern Colorado had known they would be hit with flash floods? Do you think that now they wish they had known what to expect?

The Beaufort Patriot TEA Party is sponsoring a meeting Thursday night that will include three experts on ObamaCare. They will explain how the law, when it becomes effective on October 1 will affect you. And it will affect you. It matters not whether you are an individual with or without medical insurance currently, no whether you are a small business or work in a small business or whether your employer does or does not provide you with health insurance. All of these categories will be impacted in two weeks.

The TEA party recently sent out email notice of the meeting. One of our staff forwarded the email to a friend. Her response was: "I don't go to meetings like this..." And therein lies the problem in America today.

This person will be the first to complain when their health insurance cost skyrockets. They will scream bloody murder when their employer drops their health insurance because the business cannot afford it. And they will not know how they will get "guaranteed" coverage and how much it will cost them. And they will wonder why their employer cut them back to part-time. And little will they know that Congress has exempted itself from these impacts. And they will no doubt be shocked and surprised when their doctor retires early. They will complain bitterly when they can't get a doctor's appointment for six months, or a year, for an important ailment, only to be denied the treatment once they've seen a doctor.

But these impacts will hit. Many in just two weeks. Why would a person not want to know what is going to happen and what they might be able to do about it?

But all that is at the personal level. What is even more significant is that this lady will not know what impact this new entitlement will have on the U. S. economy and what changes people representing her in office should be doing about it. She will have no clue about what it means that the Federal government will have to borrow every single dollar they put into ObamaCare, with much of it coming form Communist China. She will "not attend meetings like this..." But the impact on her and the country will come, nonetheless.

The information that will be dispensed at this meeting will not change what is going to happen in two weeks. But it will help those who attend to understand what is happening and what will happen to them and their family.

There will, however, be a group of people who will meet Thursday night and they will leave that meeting better prepared for what is going to happen to them because they have a better idea of what those impacts will be. And they will leave that meeting knowing what they can do about what needs to be done by their elected officials.

We often complain about what "politicians" do to us. But when you stop and think about some of the really bad things these politicians do you realize that one reason they do it is simply because they can. They know we're not paying attention and that we are not going to actually do anything, no matter what they do or do not do. But whatever it is they do, we and our friends and neighbors are responsible simply because we could have done something about it, unlike the floods in Colorado.

It really is important that we inform ourselves. And it really is important that we join together with like minded citizens to work to hold our politicians accountable.

So where will you be Thursday night?

The meeting will be held at 4535 U. S. Highway West in Washington. That's the west end of the building that Mt. Olive College is located in. Click here for more information on the meeting.
