Dorothy Josephine White (AKA - Dorothy Jo, Dottie, Dot, Mom, and Nana) was born September 11, 1929, to Charles "Chas" Hopkins White and Rachael "Radie" Lee Archer in Greensboro, NC. Each parent came from large families with several siblings apiece. Charles from Mocksville and Radie was from Greensboro.

Dottie was an only child and grew up in Greensboro. She graduated from Grimsley HS in 1947. She then went to an all-girls Junior College called Stradford in Virginia. She graduated in 1949. She met Clair Walters Roberts in 1950 while working in her only job at the Guilford County Clerk's office. It was a blind date set up by her friend Cleo Cannedy. At this time, Clair was attending NC State and studying Engineering, he was also a member of the NC State ROTC.

They were married on May 5, 1951, and after their honeymoon Clair received orders for duty for the Air Force in May of 1951. Then they had their first child, Jeffery Lynn in Biloxi, MS on February 4, 1953. Their second child, Carol Elizabeth was born in Wichita Falls, TX on September 12, 1955. The family moved to several Air Force Bases over the next 18 years. Clair went to Vietnam for a year in 1967 while the family stayed in Miami, FL. Their last base they were stationed in was Altus, OK, where they had a third child, Lisa Josephine born on June 18,1970.

After Clair retired as a Major from the Air Force in June of 1971, the family moved to Washington, NC. They bought a house in Cedar Circle.

In 1983, Dottie met Francis William Jump and got married in 1985. Moved from Cedar Circle to 202 Haven Way in 1987. Dottie and Francis were very sociable and loved to entertain, having friends over for Christmas and New Years Eve gatherings to name a few.

Dottie was regularly active in the Washington Yacht and Country Club with her Bridge club, playing monthly. Dottie also had a few weekly card games at her house with a host of dear and longtime friends. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Washington. For many years, she helped in the kitchen with the Wednesday Night Fellowship activities.

Dottie, is survived by 2 children, 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Was married to 2 incredible men for over 50 years. She has mentioned several times that she was a very lucky person, because she has never really had a job. Though we all know being a mother is a full-time job.

Dottie lived a long life enough to witness the following:

Jets, TV (black and white - to color to flat screen), rabbit ears with only 3 channels to cable vision and hundreds of channels, records to cassettes, DVD's, VHR's, land line rotary phones on the walls with long cords to all variation of wireless phones, microwave ovens, transistor radios, cars from all over the world, rise and fall of several countries......

Big Band Era, Sinatra, Elvis, the Beatles and every other kind of music genre. Her favorite movie was Gone with the Wind.

She witnessed WWII, Korea, the Kennedy assassination, men in space, Vietnam, a moon landing, the space shuttles, landing back on earth like a plane in the movies.

Dottie had many talents, as mentioned before, she loved the game of bridge and had Master points, not sure what you do with them, but she had them. Dottie was extremely competitive with everything she did. If you played any kind of game with her, you know what I mean. She used to be in a mixed bowling league with Clair and held the high game for years and never let him forget it. She even bowled a perfect game while pregnant with Lisa. Dottie sang in choirs over the years and was in some dancing troupes for holiday events at the various AFB officer's clubs. Cooking was not her strong point early on, but later in life she became an excellent cook. She was an avid knitter in my early years, her kids wore many handmade mittens and sweaters. Her home decoration skills were impressive. The house was always neat as a pin and decked out for every holiday. Dottie shared a love for shoes and jewelry with her daughters, Carol and Lisa.

In closing, Dottie was a friend to many, mom to a few, and nana to several. She will be greatly missed but not forgotten. Her memory will live on for a very long time.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be directed to the First Baptist Church of Washington, NC. The address is 113 N Harvey Street, Washington, NC, 27889. Condolences may be made through the Paul Funeral Home website.
