Press Release:

Raleigh, N.C.     Fewer than 1,000 voters statewide may have received a letter in error from their county board of elections stating that they submitted a voter registration application after the registration deadline for the 2025 municipal elections, which was October 10.

These voters may not have initiated an update to their existing registration, which could have caused confusion for some letter recipients. Instead, their county boards of elections made administrative corrections to their voter registration records after the voter registration deadline as part of voter roll list maintenance processes. Those administrative updates triggered the printing of the late registration letters.

No registrations were canceled or removed from the rolls because of this letter, and this error will in no way affect these voters' eligibility to vote in the 2025 municipal elections.

To prevent additional letters from going out in error, the county boards have been instructed not to send these "Late Voter Registration" notices temporarily, while the State Board makes changes to the State Elections Information Management System (SEIMS) to prevent these letters from being sent to voters with pending administrative corrections.

If You Believe You Received a Letter in Error...

Any registered voter may check their voter registration status using the State Board's Voter Search tool, or contact their county board of elections for additional information. Contact information is available at County Board of Elections Search.

Early voting in the municipal elections continues through 3 p.m. Saturday, November 1. To find early voting sites and schedules in your county, use the Early Voting Site Search, or view the Early Voting Sites for the Nov. 4, 2025 Municipal Elections (PDF).

Election Day is Tuesday, November 4. Voters can find their Election Day polling place by entering your information into the Voter Search, or search using your address with the Election Day Polling Place Search.
