Tansey Topics: A weekly look at what's happening at BCCC from President Barbara Tansey
BCCC was notified this week by the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust week that it will be awarded a $150,000 grant to build a one-mile walking trail. The award is part of the trust's Healthy Place North Carolina initiative aimed at improving the health and overall qualify of life for people in North Carolina's rural areas. Once completed, the trail with have four health assessment stations along with literature to provide walkers with health information. It will be available for use by the campus community and the public during daylight hours. Thanks to BCCC Grant Writer Sara Singleton and all those involved in this effort. Here's some of what else happened at BCCC during the past week:
• The Interact Club at Beaufort County Early College High School was officially recognized by Rotary International on Monday in a ceremony and reception attended by members of the Washington Noon and Washington Rotary clubs. About 25 students were inducted as members of the newly-chartered club and officers were installed. Congratulations to the officers, club members and their advisors Katherine Alligood and Amanda Smith for their hard work to reach this milestone!
• BCCC fielded two teams in the Washington/Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce Adult Trivia Challenge on Tuesday. Team 1 members Pauline Godley, Betty Gray, Brian Miller and Joan Robeson
and Team 2 members Marshall Hall, Judy Jennette Keith Lyon, Saundra Pinkham represented the college well during the event. Team 1 was eliminated early but Team 2 made it to the final round!
• BCCC welcomed about 200 people to College Night on Tuesday when potential new college students and those interested in transferring had the chance to meet with representatives of our college and about 40 other institutions. Thanks very much to Vice President of Student Services Rick Anderson, Director of Admissions and Recruitment Daniel Wilson and their teams for their hard work representing BCCC.
• Five BCCC students are among the first in short-term training programs at the college to receive a scholarship established earlier this year by the State Employees' Credit Union Foundation. Brenda Y. Gonzolez, a Nurse Aide I student; Chaundra L. Graham, a Nurse Aide II student; Kaela F. Howard, a Nurse Aide I student; Jerri L. McCray, a Nurse Aide II student, and Marcia D. Peartree, an EMS student, are the first to receive the scholarships. Thanks to Nurse Aide Program Coordinator Sue Gurley for her work with this new scholarship and congratulations to these outstanding students!
• The BCCC Staff Association has scheduled "Butterball and Basketball" give-aways this fall that will appeal to both cooks and sports fans and help Staff Association members raise funds for its charitable activities this year. Through Nov. 18, the group is selling raffle tickets for its annual turkey and ham raffle. Tickets are $1. Through Dec. 11, the group is selling raffle tickets to win four tickets and a parking pass to the Carolina vs. Maryland basketball game to be played Tuesday, Feb. 4, in the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill. Please support this fund-raising effort.
• Personal and Personnel Notes: Congratulations to Whiting Toler who has accepted the position of Network Administrator. BCCC will begin advertising for a new systems analyst to succeed Toler. Congratulations also to Lead Early Childhood Associate Instructor Caroline Hardee on her election as Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Beaufort County Partnership for Children. Congratulations also to Vice President of Research Jay Sullivan on his recent election as Eastern Representative to CCPRO, the Community College Planning and Research Organization. Get well wishes go to Custodian Mike Griffin who was injured in an automobile accident and is recovering from surgery and to Welding Instructor Ted Clayton who is also recovering from surgery. Finally, condolences to ESL Instructor George Martinez on the death of his wife.
