Elderly Man Loses his Life in Controlled Burn | Eastern NC Now

The victim was identified as Richard Balzer, age 88, of Dan Taylor Road.

For Immediate Release:

    On October 30, 2013 at approximately 5:58 p.m., the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a brush fire on Dan Taylor Road in Washington. Fire crews responded and began to extinguish the fire. While on scene, fire fighters located a deceased male in the area that had been burned. Deputies with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office responded and began an investigation to determine the cause of death.

    The victim was identified as Richard Balzer, age 88, of Dan Taylor Road. Balzer had been working in his yard earlier in the day and was conducting a controlled burn on his property. Information collected at the scene and preliminary autopsy results indicate that Balzer died of medical complications before the fire got out of control. Foul play is not expected at this time.

On Saturday, October 11th, 2025, Deputies with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence at 739 Cherry Rd, Washington NC for a 911 call reporting a male subject being shot.
On Sunday, September 21, 2025 at approximately 1900 hours, Washington Police Department units were dispatched to the 600 block of West 9th Street in reference to a possible shooting in progress.
On December 16 th the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Response Team along with officers from the Washington Police Department joined forces to arrest a subject wanted in Beaufort and Pitt County for ten outstanding warrants that included multiple felony charges.
