Leonard Thomas “Tom” Cutler | Eastern NC Now

    Leonard Thomas "Tom" Cutler passed away unexpectedly at home on March 20, 2026.

    Tom was born to James and Mary Cutler on April 8, 1947. He was one of seven children raised on a farm in Terra Ceia, NC.

    He graduated from Pantego High School in 1965 and often shared fond memories of driving the school bus and playing on the baseball team. He married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Ida Faye Brooks, on October 1, 1966.

    Tom loved farming from a young age and spent his life plowing, planting, and caring for fields all over Beaufort and Hyde Counties. When he wasn't busy farming, he could be found "piddling" in his shop, working on his truck, or building toy tractors and whirly gigs. He was known as a jack of all trades who could fix just about anything.

    Nothing made him happier or more proud than his nine grandchildren, to whom he was known as Papa. He was an avid sports fan and could often be found cheering his grandsons on at both the basketball court and the baseball field. He enjoyed teaching them how to fish, how to drive, how to repair farm equipment, and how to play rummy.

    Tom was a loving and dedicated caregiver for his wife, Ida Faye, who preceded him in death in 2021. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Pete Cutler and Donnie Cutler; his sister, Delores Langley; and his nephew, Patrick Boyd.

    He is survived by his son, Brooks and wife Misty of Yeatesville and their children Taylor (Robbie) O'Brien, Brayden, Zachary and Wyatt; his daughter Laura Saufley and husband Aaron of Greenville and their children Annagrace, Madalyn, Layla, Cyrus and Alex; a brother, Marshall Cutler of Terra Ceia; sisters Tinker Boyd and Mary Latham of Pungo; and a large family of nieces and nephews.

    A private graveside service for immediate family will be held on Monday, March 23.
