The loving force of nature, Mary Costulis, calmed to a soft breeze on May 13, 2026. She was a beloved daughter, sister, aunt, godmother, grandmother, and friend.

Mary was born in Wakefield, Massachusetts, on September 3, 1936, and moved to Belhaven, North Carolina, in 1945. She was the second child and only daughter of Helen Stillas-Costulis Zambos and George John Costulis. Her long and productive life can be measured simply by the many names spoken with love: Mama Mary, Mimi, Aunt Mary, Miss Mary, and Grandma. She was ever-present for those she loved.

Mary enjoyed cooking, reading magazines, visiting with neighbors, caring for her cats, singing in the church choir, and staying abreast of all things Belhaven.

Her storied career began at the family restaurant, the Roxy Café, and later as owner-operator of The Center Shop. She also worked alongside her brother, George, for two years at his restaurant in Fredericksburg, Virginia. She was a skilled and dedicated restaurateur.

Her final career-and the one she most treasured-was with Paul Funeral Home. She worked in the Belhaven office for over 40 years and loved "the men" who came to assist with services whenever they were needed. The staff of Paul Funeral Home became like family to her.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, John George Costulis; her dear friends Dot Williams Leigh, Bill Snell, Wanda Edwards Williams; and Jose Garcia.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her brother, George John Costulis, and sister-in-law, Elsie Costulis; her nephew, John Arthur Costulis (Kay); her niece, Cynthia Costulis Killough (Brian); three great-nieces, one great-nephew, and two great-great-nephews. Remarkably, a great-great-niece was born on the same day Mary passed, in the same city where Mary herself was born.

She is also lovingly remembered by her "bonus family," the Ramirez/Gonzales family including Martha (Jose Garcia), Jose, and Austin, who were her devoted companions, helpmates, and caregivers. She loved them dearly. Her friends Sue Rose and Debra Moore brought her great comfort and joy in her later years. Her godchildren-Missy Austin, Sabra Anne Askew, Shiloh Rose, Jose Ramirez, and Austin Ramirez-brought her pride and happiness through their lives and accomplishments.

A celebration of life and reception will be held at a later date in Belhaven.

Memorial donations may be made in Mary Costulis' memory to St. James Episcopal Church, 545 Main Street, Belhaven, NC 27810.

Paul Funeral Home of Belhaven is honored to serve Mary's family.
