Tansey Topics: A weekly look at what's happening at BCCC

Beaufort County Community College is working hard to meet the new emergency medical needs for the community! Vice President of Continuing Education Chet Jarman, Director of EMS Programs Steve Taylor and I met with the Beaufort County Board of Commissioners this week to advise them of training opportunities available at BCCC for first responders. Space is still available in BCCC's Paramedic Courses that will train those first responders to be able to offer the most advanced care to those needing prompt medical attention. Paramedic courses are being offered 6 to 9:30 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays through Nov. 5, 2014 and for those working a shift schedule, BCCC is offering a "flip-flop" schedule 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays to give students the chance to attend either day.

The classes are offered through BCCC's Division of Continuing Education. If you know of someone who may be interested in paramedic training, have them contact Steve at (252) 940-6297 or by email at stevet@beaufortccc.edu.

Here's a quick look at other recent events at BCCC:

    BCCC Foundation News

    • Contributions and pledges to the BCCC Foundation from faculty and staff during the Foundation's Campus Campaign totalled $6,744, an increase over the previous year. Thanks to all faculty and staff who chose to include the Foundation among their charitable contributions and thanks to Foundation

Director Judy and Foundation Specialist Marcia Norwood for their hard work.

    • The campaign to build an electronic sign at BCCC has recently received a $5,000 donation from the Weyerhaeuser Foundation and a $1,000 donation from Coca Cola of Washington. I thank these two organizations very much for their contributions and for their continued support of the college.

    Business and Industry Services

    • Do you know how to "hide your goat?" If you were one of about 60 people who attended the presentation by Steve Gilliland on Monday, then you know the value of combating negative thinking. Thanks very much to Business and Industry Services Director Lentz Stowe for arranging Steve's visit to BCCC and that very much to Foundation Director Judy Jennette for arranging the refreshments after the presentation.

I hope everyone who heard Steve's remarks gained valuable insights.

    Business and Industrial Technology

    • BCCC's Welding students, faculty and staff continue to improve their area. After repainting the welding lab to coordinate with new welding equipment, the group recently completed a project that upgraded the area's floor. Kudos to Lead Welding Instructor Ted Clayton and his team for their efforts to improve this area.

    • BCCC's Basic Law Enforcement Training Program continues its search for a new area for its students to practice their driving skills after being notified that it could no longer use the Warren Field Airport in Washington. We continue to explore several options, including the use of an airport in a neighboring county and grants that would allow BCCC to build a track that could be used by programs throughout the region. Watch for more news on this issue.

    Human Resources

    • As a reminder, all employees must complete a new North Carolina withholding form and return it to the Human Resources Office no later than Thursday, December 12. The change is a result of a new law passed by the N.C. General Assembly that goes into effect January 1, 2014.

    Occupational Extension

    • Classes are scheduled to begin January 27 for BCCC's new Certified Production Technician Program.

Funded by an N.C. Back-to-Work Grant, the classes are being offered through the Division of Continuing Education. The coursework involves training recognized by the Manufacturing Skills Standards Council in four areas - Safety, Quality and Continuous Improvement, Manufacturing Processes and

Production and Maintenance Awareness. Information sessions about the new program are scheduled for January 7 through 9 in Washington, Columbia, Plymouth and Lake Landing. Thanks to Occupational Extension Director Lou Stout and Grant Writer Sara Singleton for their work on this program.

Lou and Sara are also hard a work on developing an Industrial Maintenance Program and submitting a grant to fund it. Watch for updates about both new programs in the coming weeks.

    Student, Faculty and Staff Activities

    • BCCC students, faculty and staff enjoyed the Student Government Association's Christmas Social on Tuesday. Thanks to Student Activities Coordinator Theresa Edwards and our SGA officers for their work on this event.

    • Students Striving for Success through Leadership held a Silent Auction this week to raise funds for the club's community service projects. The club is also conducting a toiletry drive through Friday, December 13 - collecting shampoos, conditioner, toothbrushes, toothpaste and other similar items - that will be distributed to local group homes and shelters. You can take donated items to the office of Sandra Hunter, Room 120 of Building 1.

    • BCANS, BCCC's association of nursing students, held a blood drive this week to the help the American Red Cross stock up on its blood supplies in advance of the holidays. Congratulations to our nursing students for this successful event.

    • Don't forget to support the toy drive through Friday, December. 6, conducted by BCCC's chapter of Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society. Donate a new, unwrapped toy for children from two months to five years of age. Boxes are located in Buildings 1, 5, 9, 11 and 12.

    • Tickets are on sale through Wednesday, December 11, for the Staff Association's Basketball Raffle. You can win four tickets and a parking pass to the Carolina/Maryland basketball game on Tuesday, February

    4. Proceeds support Staff Association activities.

    • Several organizations are collecting canned goods for charities this Christmas season. Look for information on drop boxes across the campus!

    Personnel and Personal Notes

    • I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving holiday and, by the looks of all of the decorations across campus, everyone is looking forward to Christmas.

    • Don't forget the ugly Christmas sweater and tie contest at the Faculty and Staff Christmas luncheon and please try to support the various charitable activities underway across campus this holiday season!

    • Congratulations to Duplicating and Mailroom Services Coordinator Tracey Johnson who was elected Chairman of the Washington County Board of Commissioners this week.

    • Congratulations also to Kenneth Worsley who has accepted the position of Switchboard Coordinator.
