Commented on We are a Representative Government; Act like ItStan, I have an article in the discard stack about character revealed. It discussed how a former politician acts after they are no longer in the hunt that their true character is revealed. My judgement of Character used to be my first gateway in selecting a candidate, but that has been somewhat diluted recently.
Example number one of character post public office : Al Gore

Commented on Aunt Jemima Pancake Mix, Rolling Pins and Baseballs Are Too Dangerous To Be Allowed Into Our Government SchoolsAlex, I often think that I am encroaching on one of your previous post. Having bought and read your book and all of your blogs both here an on your blog site, I have a long standing policy of not actually plagiarizing but merely alluding to an idea. It is kinda of like the meaning of "is."
For the readers here is the post Alex referred to in his comment below. beaufortcountynow.com

Commented on Aunt Jemima Pancake Mix, Rolling Pins and Baseballs Are Too Dangerous To Be Allowed Into Our Government SchoolsThe sad part of this is that some people (how many I have no idea) think the school officials did the right thing. I am also worried about their stance on the proper way to wear a baseball hat. Should the sun visor be used to protect the eyes or the back of a red neck.

Commented on We are a Representative Government; Act like ItWell said.
I am not sure when I lost confidence in my government to tell me the truth. I'm not talking about shading the truth a bit, but outright lying for political purposes. I always knew that certain things had to be kept secret for national security or sensitive negotiations. That is reality. I was never naive enough to think they did not fudge things from time to time. I am not a conspiracy nut. But when citizens lose overall faith and trust in their government and its institutions we are destined for disillusionment. Most reasonable people can accept that we must keep certain secrets. However, when we erode the fundamental trust a citizenry has for its government we create a vacuum. Donald Trump did not create this vacuum; he merely stepped forward when it was clear we could no longer trust our representatives: Democrat or Republican. The system can no longer sustain itself because of the people we allowed to run it. “Sometimes it is said that man cannot be trusted with the government of himself. Can he, then, be trusted with the government of others? Or have we found angels in the form of kings to govern him? Let history answer this question.” ― Thomas Jefferson www.goodreads.com

Commented on The Political designated hitter rule-Who's on first?I am not sure which picture is accurate. The first is shown as is I downloaded it with the bat addition in place of a golf club (it could have been doctored by a Liberal). The comment picture has been doctored (by me, a deplorable) to reflect a slim and more trim Donald. I can't believe anything I see anymore on the internet.
It reminds me of the guy who was caught by his wife in a motel with his secretary. "Now honey, are you going to believe what I tell you are your lying eyes?"

Commented on The Political designated hitter rule-Who's on first?Getting a free pass just because you are likable: (Extract from another of my muses)
Not everyone can do that but Bubba Clinton and Uncle Joe Biden have perfected it to an art. We all may have a friend like that. We give them a pass just because they are so likable. I never had that problem. Even though I tried, my smarta$$ showed through the veneer. Oh, That's just old – "???"

Commented on The Political designated hitter rule-Who's on first? After watching the link below, I remembered a song that illustrated the point of why music is the best put down, Here is John Denver poking fun at Gary Hart. Only Bubba Clinton can get away with that stuff after Gary. I think we may all have a Bubba friend who seems to be impervious to repercussions. Hell, for a while, I might have qualified but I have a friend who holds the un-contested 2nd place, or at least he did.

Commented on Deceiver in Chief? Evidence Obama ‘put in the fix’ for Hillary in FBI’s email investigationI think I would agree with you about W&B. That was when the superstar status began to be applied to working journalist. After that it was the sensational and the so called 'Investigative Journalism" that made the story about the reporter just as it did the subject. Ever since then, the emphasis has been on that next big story. Because of the natural left leaning bias of journalist it has evolved into a wing of the Progressive Movement which sometimes, but rarely turns on its own.

Commented on The Long and Winding RoadIt's true. When my mother passed in 1999 she was 87 years old. I was 54. Their little three-bedroom home still had a sign on the two extra bedroom doors. One said Jim's Room and the other had a sign for me as well.

A boy's fascination with trains, planes and cars tends to prove that Thomas Wolfe was wrong. I spent many hours in the viaducts of Atlanta wandering around the Underground before it became a tourist attraction. In the fifties you could stand at the end of the Atlanta Airport runways and watch the planes come and go with only a chain link fence between you and the touchdown. Later it was a great place to park with a date and dream of other destinations.

Commented on FBI Director Jim Comey Testifies on Capital HillI agree the fix was and is in. Heard on radio (local PBS) while going to grocery that some right wing groups are now saying that after the election President Obama will pardon all involved before leaving office. Commented on FBI Director Jim Comey Testifies on Capital HillI found it informative that the Justice department gave immunity and not the FBI. Comey stated that he was not involved in the immunity negotiations. The FBI apparently is acting merely as a fact-finding sniffer but is not in the prosecuting mode. You and I may differ on Comey's motives but I know that nothing would ever come of a referral to prosecute in this administration and justice department.
I don't think we have seen this level of abuse since Nixon went through three FBI directors after Hoover died and had a corrupt attorney General and staff as well. Not much has changed in the abuse game Apparently there is no William Ruckelshaus around now to resign in the face of what appears to be a massive cover-up.

Commented on Will the FBI Become the Next Corrupt Federal Agency?I am watching the FBI Director Comey's testimony now and it appears that he is walking the fine line between his role as an investigator and lawyer. I have tried to give him the benefit of doubt as I think he is a principled man with perhaps a bit too much Eagle Scout influnce.
My layman's interpretation of his testimony and his July press conference is that he is walking the narrow road of what the facts are and what he can prove. That may help me resolve the "Reasonable Prosecutor" comment. No prosecutor should bring a case he does not think he can prove in a court of law. I believe he is a principled bureaucrat (in the non-pejorative sense) trying to avoid the partisan ditch on both sides of the road. I am not a naive man but I do consider myself somewhat of a fair judge of character. I know a retired FBI agent who is a very right leaning citizen now, but he has told me that one of the major tenants of the FBI code is still to follow the facts. Perhaps I am just looking for something in our government and leaders to believe in again. It is an exercise in hide and seek I never thought I would see.

Careful Ryan, you are in danger of becoming a principled and practical political partisan. That will make you the kind of voter that our founders envisioned in the creation of this country. That is not a criticism but a tribute to your analysis. Politics is a cheer-leading sport while governing is an on the field event. In a game of X and O's we sometimes get lost in watching the pretty girls on the sideline instead of the three yards and a cloud of dust on the field.
The cheerleaders are there to keep the crowd enthusiastic but the coaches are there to keep the players focused on the game plan. However, the players are the ones who play the game. Your analysis is spot on and hopefully there are those in the Trump camp who can help him with both the perception and authenticity of his positions. I did not watch the debate or the after game analysis for the same reason that I do not contemplate my life had I not been born. Some events impede any speculation of what if. I have already made my decision and have left the stadium. I encourage you to become a player in the game, then eventually a coach. There will be plenty of cheerleaders as needed but "Teddy R" gave us the best advice about being in the arena and you are well on your way to making that difference. Keep up the good work and don't lose the faith. Thanks for indulging an old man in the wee hours of the morning with too many metaphors and sports allusions on his mind.

I built up a reservoir of TIVO programs to watch until the Debate evaluation dies down.
I have quite a few FB "friends" who are on the opposite side of the political aisle as I. For that reason, I rarely post politics on FB. I did a couple of times long ago and was immediately unfriended by my tolerant left leaning friends even though they post daily about the last meme of Occupy Democrats or whatever. Now, I just unfollow them and check their feed once a month. Two of them were x-girlfriends I have not seen or talked to in 45 years. They managed to survive the young 'misogynist' BT but not the slightly to the right older BT. I never knew they were so sensitive.

I still have not reviewed the debate tape yet. Here is how I would rate the debate sight unseen.
1. Did anybody on CNN, MSNBC, CBS, ABC, or NBC switch from Hillary to Trump? 2. Did anybody on Fox switch from Trump and Hillary? If not, then we are pretty much back to square one. I guess the only way for me to get an in-depth analysis & perspective is to check my "Friends" comments on Facebook. I'll do that right after I change my unfollow settings. Some of my friends post on FB as often as I do on BCN. Heaven forbid.

Stan, I guess the media was going to fact check Trump anyway, so why did they want to waste time during the debate doing it. Maybe to limit the time the candidates had with comments or to blunt the 'Lying Hillary' mantra.

Commented on Will the FBI Become the Next Corrupt Federal Agency? The FBI was probably always corrupt but J. Edgar kept it non- partisan. All presidents have shown a tendency to abuse the system from Nixon to Obama.
I suspect there is a book in the future for Mr. Comey. By all reports prior to his news conference on Hillary's emails, he was regarded by both sides as a straight shooter. I still wonder about his motivations on laying out the evidence and then taking the fall for what he may have known would never be a successful prosecution. He may have realized that the fix was in or he may have been part of it, but it will eventually be analyzed perhaps he can redeem what seems like a tarnished reputation. The FBI always protects the FBI and this time it appears to be part of the cover-up but I will await the final act before the curtain falls to decide.

Commented on 2001: Mississippi State FlagI use the Trilogy version which was arranged by Mickey Newberry and later stolen by Elvis. Elvis did a good job, but Mickey put more heart into it. Mickey Newbury is a songwriter most famous for a song he arranged, but did not write. One night in Los Angeles, at a time of national distress over war and race issues in the U.S.A he arranged the three songs that covered the full breadth of the race issues then and now.
