Press Release:

Raleigh, NC     This week, the North Carolina State Board of Education will review school district alternatives to the third grade Read to Achieve assessments. In anticipation of tomorrow's vote, Governor Pat McCrory issued the following statement:

"It's imperative that EVERY child regardless of their circumstance is reading at grade level by the third grade. I applaud the new legislation that sets the bar high for our students and teachers and allows local flexibility in its implementation.

"As I've traveled the state and met with teachers, students and superintendents, I've consistently heard they need flexibility in implementing the law to ensure we are not overtesting. We continue to listen to and trust the feedback of our local educators.

"Today, I ask the State Board of Education to strongly consider local proposals that meet school districts' unique needs to meet the new standards. To be clear, it's unacceptable to me that ANY child is not reading at grade level by the third grade. Illiteracy is a one-way ticket to economic ruin.

"I appreciate the legislative leaders and State Board of Education members' work on improving student literacy. And I especially appreciate our students, parents and teachers for making reading a top priority."

Governor McCrory is currently working with legislative leaders on education initiatives focused around respect, rewards and results for our students, parents and teachers.
