Press Release:

Raleigh, NC     First Lady Ann McCrory will light up the executive mansion in red tomorrow through the end of February to raise awareness for heart disease among women.

Cardiovascular disease kills more women in the United States than any other disease, and it is the No. 2 killer overall in North Carolina.

"We are delighted to 'Go Red' at the mansion to raise awareness among North Carolinians about this deadly disease," said First Lady McCrory. "Pat and I urge families across North Carolina to take the time to discuss measures to prevent the tragic effects of heart disease. Our neighborhood supermarkets and farmers markets sell fresh North Carolina fruits and vegetables year round that can contribute to a healthier diet. Even simple choices such as walking instead of driving to lunch or visiting one of our state's beautiful parks with your family over the weekend instead of watching TV can be the difference between healthy and unhealthy lives."

The red lights on the mansion are part of the Go Red for Women initiative, an American Heart Association program designed to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease to save lives and help women to share their stories.

The North Carolina Council for Women, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, will host a Go Red for Women event tomorrow at 11 a.m. through 2 p.m at the Department of Public Instruction Building, 301 N. Wilmington Street, in Raleigh. The event is free to the public and includes cooking demonstrations, presentations, prizes and more.

Please visit the council's website to register for the event or to watch the event on a live stream.
