BCCC announces Medical Lab Technology Information Sessions | Eastern North Carolina Now

Press Release:

Do you enjoy solving problems? Are you interested in a career in health care but prefer to work behind the scenes? If so, then you would enjoy a career in medical laboratory technology.

Beaufort County Community College will hold information sessions to give prospective students a look at careers in medical laboratories and the course work needed to qualify for those careers at noon and 5:30 p.m., Monday, March 24 in Room 1217 of Building 12 on the BCCC campus.

The deadline is April 30 for applications for admission to the Medical Laboratory Technology, or MLT, Program beginning in the fall 2014 at BCCC.

The MLT curriculum prepares students to collect samples and interpret findings involving tissue samples, blood and bodily fluids of patients in hospitals, medical offices, industrial and research centers, among other job functions.

Medical laboratory technologists are also needed to maintain the equipment needed for diagnosis and treatment.

MLT course work includes mathematical and scientific concepts related to this work.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage of medical technologists was $56,130 and medical laboratory technicians, $36.280 in May 2010.

Employment is expected to grow between 11 and 15 percent through 2020 as an increase in the aging population will lead to a greater need to diagnose medical conditions - such as cancer and Type-2 Diabetes - through laboratory procedures.

For more information about the information sessions or the MLT Program at BCCC, visit the Allied Health Page on the BCCC website at www.beaufortccc.edu. Interested persons may contact Erica Schatz, Dean of the Allied Health Sciences, at (252) 940-6425 or Phylicia Bridgers, Allied Health Admissions Coordinator, at (252) 940-6221 for more information about the program and application process.
