Nursing Students Receive Two-Year SECU Scholarships | Eastern North Carolina Now

    WASHINGTON, N.C.    Beaufort County Community College nursing students Madison Hall and Gabriella Jordon received the State Employees' Credit Union (SECU) Foundation People Helping People Scholarship, a $5,000 award distributed across two years. The scholarship is funded through monthly contributions from SECU's 2.9 million members. Deborah Waters, senior financial services officer at the Washington branch, presented the students with the scholarship.

    Madison Hall is an Associate Degree Nursing student. As a high school captain in volleyball and softball, she learned to lead by example and support her teammates. College has strengthened her independence, accountability, and time management as she balances academics with athletics. Madison has given back through the Special Olympics, youth sports camps, Samaritan's Shoebox, hurricane relief drives, and Senior Beta Club projects. She looks forward to a career as a health care provider where she can continue helping others.

    Gabriella Jordon has served her community through her church, helping with Vacation Bible School and food bank projects alongside her mother, the Children's Ministry Director. She has also worked as a waitress and stayed active in athletics, playing volleyball, basketball, and soccer. Her experiences include an African mission trip, earning scuba certification, and winning a local pageant. After graduating from Beaufort CCC, Gabriella plans to continue her education at East Carolina University, pursue nursing at the Children's Hospital in Greenville, and ultimately become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist with the goal of serving in medical missions overseas.


    Scholarships are awarded to students who best exemplify the membership philosophy of credit unions, "People Helping People," and who have demonstrated leadership, excellence of character, integrity, and community involvement. Preference is given to students whose parents, guardians, or family members are public sector employees who live and work in North Carolina. Students must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher and be enrolled in an associate degree, diploma, or certificate program. Students are connected to the scholarship through the BCCC Foundation.

    The SECU Foundation awards 116 scholarships to North Carolina community college students annually, representing an annual commitment of $580,000.
