Story of America Reports Beaufort County's Most Recent Involvement in the Ongoing Pungo District Hospital Saga | Eastern North Carolina Now

For immediate Release:

Story of America contributors Eric Byler and Annabel Park have presented to me a well produced, finely edited vignette from their documentary that they are in the process of preparing regarding Vidant's closing of Pungo District Hospital. This brief installment tells a short story of what transpired on Friday afternoon March 14, 2014, when the Beaufort County Commissioners, at their Emergency Called Meeting and by the slimmest of margins, offered the people of Belhaven the opportunity save their hospital.

The Beaufort County Commissioners, as a funding source not unlike a lending institution, has offered a economic lifeline to Belhaven, which will afford them the ability to move forward to construct a deal between the People of Belhaven, represented by their town government, and the LLC that controls the property where the hospital now stands.

Regardless of what transpires, from what could become a human tragedy in Beaufort County's most northeastern community and all parts east, who have no hospital otherwise, there is now an opportunity to make this work, and we at BCN wish them well in their endeavor that still has so many hurdles yet to come.

Installments One and Two, and then Three in the Story of America's documentary can be found here.

Thanks for using us, for we will be getting periodic updates.

They are good kids, and their product is first rate: Eric uses two 'high octane' Cannon SLRs, with a 1080p motion picture function (one always remote controlled). Annabel does the audio, which is so important because words actually do matter.

The mixing and editing is first rate.

I'm looking forward to the finished product.

These two (Park and Byler) have done a great job with their blog/documentary. I'm impressed by their ability to present some true and important facts and opinions without the sensationalism and spun rhetoric I've come to expect from political bloggers. Their coverage of the Moral Monday protests are thought provoking. It's a subject I'd begun to avoid, as most of what I did read was polarized along Moron-Monday vs Bigots-in-Charge lines, or contained pictures of angry Moms waving pictures of uterus's around. Their reporting, however, minimizes the more audacious scenes from the Moral Monday crowd to get to the real reasons for the protest. I was glad for a reasonable take on the movement, despite the silliness of the protesters, because some of their concerns are legitimate.
Their coverage of the hospital is great, and I hope they stick around or come back again to cover it's resolution. I'll be following their page.
