News Release:

Raleigh, NC     The Institute of Museum and Library Services has honored the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh with its prestigious National Medal for Museum and Library Service. The award is part of a 20-year-old program dedicated to honoring libraries and museums that make a difference for individuals, families and communities.

"While it is easy to see our state's natural beauty, it isn't as simple a task to present it in an exciting, clear and scientific way for students, adults and others to learn from and enjoy," said Governor McCrory. "The museum's curators, educators, scientists and other staff work nonstop to provide our citizens with a one-of-a-kind experience that's as exciting as it is educational, and I'm proud of their continued dedication to public service."

The medal is the nation's highest honor for museums and libraries for service to the community. The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences is one of only 10 institutions nationwide to receive the award in 2014. On May 8, First Lady Michelle Obama will honor the museum at a ceremony at the White House.

"Our staff's thorough knowledge of the natural sciences and the idiosyncrasies of North Carolina's environmental landscape have allowed them to create a museum centered on educating the public and celebrating the state's wildlife and natural history," said John Skvarla, secretary of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources. "This honor is both humbling and a great encouragement for the museum to keep up the great work it is doing every day for North Carolinians."

The museum is scheduled to provide a live broadcast of the May 8 event at 11 a.m. from the museum's Daily Planet Theater in downtown Raleigh. The broadcast is free and open to the public.
