NCDMV Extends Veteran CDL Training Courses for Military | Eastern North Carolina Now

    Raleigh, N.C. - The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV), in conjunction with Johnston County Community College, Fayetteville Technical Community College, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Fort Bragg, has announced an extension of its military truck driving training program.

    "Since entering office, our team has been focused on recruiting and connecting more veterans with jobs," said Governor McCrory, who signed legislation last year that made it easier for veterans to get Commercial Driver Licenses (CDL). "This program is a great tool to help us achieve both. Our veterans have the skills and experience employers in our state and around the world need. This educational program honors their service and will help get veterans in jobs faster."

    "This program has proven to be the positive experience for our military members leaving the armed forces that we had hoped," said DMV Commissioner Kelly Thomas. "We are excited to be able to extend this educational series and continue to offer this outstanding opportunity to North Carolina's service men and women."

    The program, which began in November of 2013, recently completed its first six sessions, where 76 former military members have graduated and earned their commercial driver license certifications. The extension of the training program adds two additional sessions and NCDMV is seeking federal grant funding for an additional year.

    The Division's partnership with the FMCSA helps administer this eight-week curriculum of classroom and driving instruction at a reduced rate with a federal grant provided by NCDMV.
