Beaufort County Community College will celebrate Women's History Month with a panel discussion featuring some of the county's noted women including two educators, a librarian and a lawyer.

Sponsored by Students Striving to Succeed through Leadership, the Student Government Association and BCCC's Psychology, Sociology and Human Services programs and TRiO/Student Support Services, the event will be noon to 1:30 p.m. in Room 935 of Building 9 on the BCCC campus. It is free to the public.

Serving on the panel will be Patricia Horton-Albritton, assistant principal at Washington High School: Saundra Pinkham, BCCC information services librarian; Regina Price, BCCC mathematics instructor, and Watsi Sutton, local attorney. The panel moderator will be Lynn Wingate, Washington Tourism and Development director.

Women's History Month is sponsored by the National Women's History Project. The theme of this year's event is "Weaving the Stories of Women's Lives."

This year's theme presents the opportunity to weave women's stories — individually and collectively stories — into the essential fabric of our nation's history, according to Sandra Hunter, student success coordinator.

"Accounts of the lives of individual women are critically important because they reveal exceptionally strong role models who share a more expansive vision of what a woman can do," she said. "There is a real power in hearing women's stories, both personally and in a larger context. Remembering and recounting tales of our ancestors' talents, sacrifices, and commitments inspires today's generations and opens the way to the future."

Horton-Albritton graduated from BCCC with an associate's degree in early childhood. She earned a bachelor's degree in child life from East Carolina University and a master's degree in school administration from Cambridge College. Horton-Albritton began her education career with the Beaufort County Schools as an exceptional education teacher and obtained the post as Assistant Principal at Northeast Elementary School before joining the administration at Washington High School.

Pinkham is a native of Washington and also a BCCC graduate. After earning an associate's degree from BCCC, she transferred to ECU and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor's degree in public history. While at ECU, she served as an intern for Tryon Palace, Hope Plantation and Joyner Library, among other organizations. She earned a master's degree in library science from North Carolina Central University and, after serving as an intern in the BCCC Learning Resources Center, returned to the college to work in its library.

A native of Pasquotank County, Price earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics and a master's degree from Elizabeth City State University. She began her teaching career in the Bertie County School System. In addition to her duties at BCCC, Price serves as an adjunct instructor teaching undergraduate mathematics courses at ECSU.

Sutton earned a bachelor's degree in economics from North Carolina A&T State University, graduating cum laude, and obtained her law degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law. Before opening the office of Watsi M. Sutton, P.A., she served as an assistant district attorney for the 2nd Judicial District of North Carolina. She also worked as the managing attorney for the New Bern office of Legal Aide of North Carolina.

A native of Beaufort County, Wingate earned a bachelor's degree in journalism and mass communications from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As the tourism director for Washington, Wingate has served on various statewide boards including the position of president of the North Carolina Travel Industry Association. Wingate also received her certification as a Travel Marketing Professional from the Southeast Tourism Society. Locally, Wingate serves on the board of the Washington Harbor District Alliance and is an active member of the Bath Business Alliance.
