Tansey Topics: A weekly look at what's happening at BCCC | Eastern North Carolina Now

The end of the semester and graduation are fast approaching at BCCC. Several events have already been held and are being planned in the next few weeks to salute our graduates and mark the end of the year. About 250 faculty, staff and graduating students and their families attended the annual Graduate Recognition Ceremony last week - giving all of us the chance to recognize the members of the Class of 2015 for their hard work. Photographs of the event are available on BCCC's Facebook page. Thanks very much to Student Activities Coordinator Theresa Edwards and her team for their hard work on the event!

    Arts and Sciences

    • The Development Education Department at BCCC recently hosted the North Carolina Association of Developmental Education's Eastern Regional Conference. About 50 participants from Alamance, Beaufort, Edgecombe, Lenior, Onslow, Pitt, Wake, Wayne and Wilson counties attended the meeting which featured three concurrent sessions and a keynote address by Denise de Ribert, director of the Kellogg Institute at Appalachian State University. Lead Instructor Dana Sauls reports that with the changing face of developmental education and new placement testing, the conference was particularly valuable to BCCC's developmental education instructors. Thanks to Dana and her team for their hard work on this event.

    BCCC Foundation

      •  Thanks to all scholarship donors and recipients who attended the BCCC Foundation's Third Annual Legacy Luncheon on Tuesday. This is an excellent chance for our students to meet and spend time with the scholarship donors who help make their educations possible.

      •  Tickets are going fast for the BCCC Foundation's inaugural lawn and garden tour 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 20. The tour will begin on the BCCC campus with a rededication of the Rosa "Rosebud" Roberson rose garden in front of Building 1. Self-drive and group transportation options will be available for those who want to tour 10 beautiful gardens in the Washington and Chocowinity areas. Watch for more information about this exciting new event!

      •  Travelers on the BCCC Foundation and Washington/Beaufort Chamber of Commerce trip to Ireland returned to the BCCC campus on Thursday night from their nine-day trip to the Emerald Isle. I hope everyone enjoyed their trip and will consider joining us on a trip next spring to Italy! Thanks to Foundation Executive Director Serena Sullivan and Foundation Specialist Marcia Norwood for their hard work arranging this first trip in cooperation with the Washington/Beaufort Chamber of Commerce. Watch for information about the 2016 international trip!

    Business and Industrial Technology

    • Applications are now being accepted for the Basic Law Enforcement Training Night Academy that will begin in August. The deadline to submit application packages for the 16-week academy is Monday, Aug. 3. Those interested in applying for admittance to the program should obtain their application packages about one month prior to the application deadline, in order to allow adequate time to complete all the needed information to enroll in the program. The class will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3, in Room 32 of Building 10 for a mandatory pre-orientation. Please share this information with anyone who may be interested.

    Campus Police

      •  BCCC Police Chief Chris Harrison reminds all BCCC faculty, students and staff of a new law, effective July 1, 2015, that requires mopeds to be registered with the state. You will also be required to register them with the BCCC Police Department just like any other vehicle. Failure to do so could result in a parking citation. For questions about this new law, contact your local Division of Motor Vehicles Office.

    Early College High School

      •  Beaufort County Early College High School students and faculty celebrated literacy while helping those less fortunate at Reading Matters an event to encourage and celebrate student readers and writers. To attend the event, students were required to bring a book to donate to Ruth's House, the local domestic violence shelter. Several local businesses, civic groups and individuals sponsored prizes for the event including Platinum Sponsor Tayloe's Hospital Pharmacy and Attorney Evan Lewis, Dr. Brad Jackson, Wine & Words...& Gourmet, Washington Jewelers, Choco Trade, Gifted Hands Barbershop & Beauty Salon, Belhaven-Pantego Rotary Club, Tar River Animal Hospital, and Ms. Marisol Barr.     • BCCC Faculty and staff are reminded that graduation is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, May 14, at Washington High School when a record number of students are scheduled to receive their certificates, diplomas and associate degrees. Please contact Theresa Edwards starting May 4 for graduation tickets and reserved parking passes. Please remember that graduation is a required event for all full-time faculty unless excused in advance by Vice President of Academics Crystal Ange. Vice President of Student Services reports that 100 seats have been reserved for faculty and staff that will be attending and 150 parking spaces have been reserved for faculty, staff and dignitaries. You must have your reserved parking pass visible in your care to be allowed to enter the reserved parking area.
