Vietnam: Where Am I? | Eastern North Carolina Now

Army Lt.: Above.     photo and details by Bobby Tony     Click image to expand.

This Army Lt. is using a Mortar plot board to locate the target and develop the settings for the Mortar crew. It does not require a map -- just location of the mortar and the location of the Forward Observer. Then the target can be plotted and an azimuth created to set the mortar in the proper direction. Elevation on the mortar and power charges determines the distanceof the round travel. This was taken in 1968 during practice exercises in what we called the laterite pit designation. The 81MM mortar is a crew served weapon and is used not in the field but in a fire support base where there is ample time to set up reference points.

Ted McDonald: I need to say something to claim the article.

Location technology in 1968 left a lot to be desired when calling for artillery near your position.

The Forward Observers might be a squad of infantry.

Land Navigation: Here is a crude hand drawn range map. You are given a Start point, Azimuth, Distance, Map, and Compass . You do not have the layout map as shown. When you exit, you mark down the end point on your range card and the grade is based on how close you come to the designated end point.
Navigating through the territory is not as simple as walking on a straight 30 degree direction. Obstructions and terrain provide barriers that must either be avoided, or circumvented. The scale not visible on this drawing shows distance.

One slight clarification: The FO and The plotter need a map initially but once they are on the board, everything can be done based on those reference points.
