Banning symbols will help us get along better. | Eastern North Carolina Now

Everyone sometime or another feels the need to display a symbol but it may not convey what they want it to. It could offend others and that would be bad, very bad.

Almost everything in life can be reduced to a simple symbol to convey your feelings, thoughts, beliefs, opinion, profession, religion, history, sexual orientation, education, college, favorite NASCAR driver, marital status, military service, sense of humor, birth month, favorite auto, mood when typing, sports team, displeasure with another's driving technique and if I have missed any category here I will use the "?" to represent that expression to be named later.

Now it is important not to confuse symbol with signs. To keep from getting confused, I Googled (Larry or Sergey, send my check to BCN Attention: Bobby Tony) symbol vs sign and got about 122,000,000 results (0.39 seconds) but if I search sign vs symbol I get about 123,000,000 results (0.36 seconds). That in and if itself is a sign about how great Google is (see above). It turns out that I am not the first person to wonder about this distinction. There are even books written to make the distinction.

Well, with all that being said here is my opinion on this subject:

Now I hope that will clarify what I believe about symbols and signs. If there is any confusion left, I suggest you get-together with friends and ban the use of all symbols. That will make it easier for those of us who are easily offended to go about our lives without having to worry about some obscure hidden meaning to the peace symbol.
