Pope Center's Schalin documents politicization, shrinking enrollment

RALEIGH     English departments have lost their positions of importance on college campuses in recent years. The change is based partly on an increased focus on education that translates directly into jobs, and partly on an increased politicization of college English classes.

The Pope Center for Higher Education Policy documents the trends in a report titled The Decline of the English Department. Director of Policy Analysis Jay Schalin offered details Monday during a speech for the John Locke Foundation's Shaftesbury Society.

In the video clip below, Schalin details declining academic standards for English majors at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
