Get Beau-Fitt

WASHINGTON, N.C.     Beaufort County Community College has launched its campaign to encourage students, staff and the community to get fit. More than 70 participants attended the kick-off event on Tuesday, Oct. 27.

Each participant received a T-shirt and a gym bag with a BCCC water bottle and microwaveable soup bowl. Raffles were held to give away Garmin Vivofit wristbands, which will be used to monitor users' activity levels over the next eight months. Other raffle items included Vidant Wellness and BCCC gym memberships, kayak and paddleboard rentals, personal fitness consulting, and massages.

Vidant Wellness Center representatives were on hand to perform health assessments, and Vidant Personal Trainer Derrick Boyce spoke to the group about motivation.

"What's going to motivate you to keep at it?" he asked. "I can get you pumped up for today, maybe for a week, but what's going to make you keep getting up out of the chair and exercising months from now? That comes from inside you."

BCCC's IMFITT one-mile fitness trail with exercise stations was built with a $150,000 grant from KB Reynolds. A fourth station of exercise equipment, as well as shade sails at all four stations, were recently added as part of a $25,000 grant from MDC. The trail is open to the public, and there is information at each piece of equipment about how to use it and what muscle groups are targeted.

Monthly brown bag lunches will be held at BCCC with guest speakers highlighting fitness and nutrition awareness. Employees, student groups and community members have been encouraged to jump-start their daily routines with the Get Beau-Fitt Challenge!
