Special Interest Groups...We Have Met the Enemy and He is Us | Eastern NC Now

    Bobby Tony wrote not too long ago, "It is human nature act in your own interest".

    Don't you just hate when he writes things that make you start thinking? Just as I was about to doze off, he made sit up and start thinking and I said to myself, "Self, just who is it that makes up Special Interest Groups?"

    Since I have used the word "thinking" twice in the short life of this Blog Posting, let's think about what exactly is a Special Interest Group.

• National Farmers Organization...National Farmers, a non-profit organization, began in 1955 as a way for producers to communicate agricultural and rural concerns to congressional and local leaders. (Does not sound so evil unless you are against eating what farmers grow because eating makes people gain weight.)
• Doris Day Animal League...The Doris Day Animal League is a national nonprofit citizens lobbying organization dedicated to protecting animals through policy initiatives, education, and corporate engagement. (Does not sound so evil unless you want to get rid of all animals because that coyote killed that lady jogger a few weeks ago.)
• National Taxpayers Union (NTU)...America's independent, non-partisan advocate for overburdened taxpayers. NTU mobilizes elected officials and the general public on behalf of tax relief and reform, lower and less wasteful spending, individual liberty, and free enterprise. (Sounds like, if you are against these guys, you are in favor of overburdening taxpayers, you are in favor of no tax relief, you are against tax reform, you are for higher and more wasteful spending, you are against liberty and/or you are for Unfree Enterprise.)

    Based upon what I have been seeing on my TV during recent months it is that last one that has me most concerned. It appears more and more of us are turning against Free Enterprise.

    I have an idea. Let's ask the people of Venezuela for pointers about how to go about replacing Free Enterprise with something better. They've been there and done that. We can all benefit from their experience...Or can we?
