BCCC Classes Cancelled until October 17 | Eastern North Carolina Now

    WASHINGTON, NC     In the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, Beaufort County Community College has cancelled classes until Monday, October 17. While conditions in Washington have improved, the community college serves students across a four-county, 2,008-square-mile area and has students from neighboring Pitt County and Craven County. Some employees and students within the service area are still reporting no power or closed roads on their route to campus.

    The BCCC main campus outside of Washington has not sustained substantial damage. Employees are returning to campus to ready facilities for classes to begin on Monday. The Learning Resource Center, which is generally open to the public, will remain closed until Monday. Instead, Building 1, Room 116 will be open for students who are without power but need to come use campus facilities to work on assignments.

    Late Start Classes, which were scheduled to start October 12, will have three inclement weather days and begin on Monday, October 17. Students who still need to pay for those classes can do so on Monday, October 17.

    A Red Cross blood drive that had been scheduled for Thursday, October 13 will still occur. It will take place in the Building 10 Multi-Purpose Room from 8:30 a.m. through 2:30 p.m. Disasters such as this are a great reminder of why community members should help out by giving blood. Due to other cancelled blood drives, the Red Cross is in great need of blood supplies and encourages the public to come donate.

    BCCC encourages its students and employees to stay safe. Do not cross roads that are covered in water. The Tar River is not expected to crest until Friday so more flooding could be on the way. The college will continue to update information through its emergency texts, Blackboard, website and social media.
