The Passing of Music Icons - 2017 -Al Jarreau February 12, 2017 | Eastern NC Now

It has been said that you need to have lived the blues to sing the blues. I am not sure I agree with that but when it comes to Jazz, I do think you have to live it to play and sing it. Al Jarreau did just that.

Al Jarreau - February 12. 2017

It has been said that you need to have lived the blues to sing the blues. I am not sure I agree with that but when it comes to Jazz, I do think you have to live it to play and sing it. Al Jarreau did just that.
From his Website: "Al Jarreau passed away today, February 12, 2017. He will be missed. A few days ago, I was asked to describe Al to someone who knew of his success, but did not know him as a person. I responded with this: His 2nd priority in life was music. There was no 3rd. His 1st priority, far ahead of the other, was healing or comforting anyone in need."

Al is perhaps best known to the general public from two songs. 'We're in This Love together' and the Theme song from the TV show Moonlighting which ran from 1985 to 1989 and starred Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis. Al sang the theme song.

My personal two favorites of Al's were of Course 'We're in This Love Together' and "Morning." Both show the range of the very versatile jazz singer. I only saw him once in a small jazz venue in Atlanta circa 1969-1970. The name of the club and my date eludes me now but I do remember that there were only a few of us 'White Folks' there and I never felt threatened or in danger. He had an infectious smile and demeanor that put everyone at ease.
