    WASHINGTON, NC     Five students graduated from Beaufort County Community College's basic law enforcement training on April 20, 2017. Alexandria Fells of Washington, John Lohman Jr. of Greenville, Juan Ramirez of Washington, Thomas Van Der Have of Bath and Stephen Warner Jr. of Scranton were honored at the ceremony.

    Russell Davenport of the Beaufort County Sherriff's Department was the guest speaker for the graduation. John Lohman delivered remarks on behalf of his class. Todd Alligood recognized representatives of law enforcement departments who were present, including local police departments and county sheriffs. Many of them are instructors or former graduates of the program. President Barbara Tansey congratulated the students on their success.

    The BLET program is designed to give students essential skills required for entry-level employment as law enforcement officers with state, county or municipal governments, or with private enterprise. The program uses state commission-mandated topics and methods of instruction. General subjects include criminal, juvenile, civil, traffic and alcoholic beverage laws; investigative, patrol, custody and court procedures; emergency responses; and ethics and community relations.

    Successful graduates receive a curriculum certificate and are qualified to take certification examinations mandated by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and/or the North Carolina Sheriffs' Education and Training Standards Commission.

    The training program at BCCC is currently open for enrollment. The start date for the fall 2017 BLET Academy is August 16.
