Students Begin Fall Semester at BCCC | Eastern North Carolina Now

Press Release:

Washington, NC     Students flocked back to start fall classes at Beaufort County Community College on August 16. They arrived as early as 8:00 a.m. for classes. At 10:00 a.m. students were treated to a Welcome Back Bash between Buildings 1 and 9 with free drinks and snacks. Students returned to see the familiar faces of classmates and faculty they have come to know, but they also saw some changes around campus.

Physical changes include some renovated classrooms. Thanks to a generous grant from the Golden Leaf Foundation, the college repurposed a classroom as the new mechatronics lab throughout the 2015-2016 academic year. The fabrication equipment involved was so large that college staff had to remove and replace a wall to move the machines inside the new lab. These machines match fabrication equipment used by local industries. The college also remodeled Building 8A to make room for workforce training that had previously occurred off campus.

The fire training program, now about to start its third year, received several training props, including a grain bin extraction prop and an extrication prop to simulate removing injured people after a collision. Both elevators on campus were repaired, and the Building 2 computer labs received new flooring.

On the technological side, students will notice the library has updated its webpage with student self-scheduling, a friendlier catalog interface and has achieved Americans with Disabilities Act compliance. Blackboard, the program students use for online classes and assignments, has been updated to the latest 2017 version to eliminate for maintenance updates. The program has also been integrated with Student Information Services so students will experience faster response time for changes made to their schedules.

BCCC continues to develop its programs to meet students' needs. By the fall of 2018 the college will offer agricultural programs for Mattamuskeet Early College High School and Columbia Early College High School. With a new full-time music instructor on campus, the college will develop more music opportunities in the community. The college also developed practical advising guides to smooth transition from BCCC to ECU.

Several new faculty members, staff and a new president, Dr. Dave Loope, will also greet new and returning students. The changes are part of BCCC's commitment to provide our students with the educational experiences that prepare them for the modern workforce or a four-year university.
