Mercatus expert says regulations weigh down N.C. economy



    Nearly 110,000 state regulations help slow North Carolina’s economic growth. An expert from the Mercatus Center at George Mason University delivered that message Tuesday to state lawmakers.

    James Broughel, Mercatus Center research fellow, offered details during an interview with Carolina Journal Radio.

    North Carolina’s certificate-of-need rules restrict growth in health care services. New Bern ophthalmologist Dr. Jay Singleton offered a firsthand account of the obstacles created by CON restrictions during a presentation Monday for the John Locke Foundation’s Shaftesbury Society.
