Judicial Candidate Filing Begins Monday | Eastern North Carolina Now

    RALEIGH, N.C.     The candidate filing period for judicial seats in the 2018 general election begins at noon Monday (June 18) and ends at noon June 29.

    Statewide judicial seats on ballots November 6 will include one N.C. Supreme Court seat and three N.C. Court of Appeals judgeships. Voters across the state also will elect about three dozen superior court judges and about 120 district court judges.

    All candidates will file their Notice of Candidacy with the Bipartisan State Board of Elections & Ethics Enforcement. Candidates must pay a filing fee (see chart below) and file paperwork during the filing period. Candidates are reminded that they must receive certification from their county board of elections before filing with the State Board. Judicial candidates also must include their North Carolina State Bar number on their Notice of Candidacy.

    Updated judicial candidate lists will be posted daily throughout the filing period on the State Board's website.

    Once filed, the deadline to withdraw as a candidate is Tuesday, June 26.

    The State Board office is closely monitoring legislative activity that may affect judicial districts.

    Session Law 2017-214 established that in 2018 there will be no judicial primary for Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, superior court or district court contests. That bill remains subject to litigation, but barring any court-imposed changes, candidates will run in the November general election without a primary.
