Vidant Medical Center neurosurgical team earns national recognition | Eastern NC Now

    Greenville, N.C.     Feb. 12, 2019     The neurosurgical team at Vidant Medical Center (VMC) was ranked among the top 100 hospitals in the nation for specialized neuroscience and spine programs by Becker's Healthcare, a leading source of business and legal information for health care leaders.

    The honor highlights Vidant Health's commitment to treating complex neurovascular disease, including stroke, which is a leading cause of death in our region. North Carolina has the sixth highest death rate from stroke in the United States, with the rate in the eastern part of the state even higher.

    "Because stroke and neurovascular disease is all too common in our region, we place great emphasis on offering the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating patients," said Dr. Stuart Lee, chief of Vidant Neurosurgery in Greenville.

    VMC exceeds the national benchmark for the American Heart Association's (AHA) quality measures for stroke and reports lower serious complication rates for diagnostic angiogram than the national benchmark. VMC recently achieved advanced certification as a Comprehensive Stroke Center by the AHA, the first hospital in the region to do so. This level of certification demonstrates the hospital's commitment to highly-specialized stroke care that includes advanced imaging, 24/7 availability of specialized treatments and unique training that enables stroke team members to manage complex stroke patients.

Vidant Duplin Hospital in Kenansville achieved Primary Stroke Center designation in 2016. Vidant Edgecombe Hospital in Tarboro achieved Primary Stroke Center designation in 2018 and Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, Vidant Chowan in Edenton and Vidant Bertie in Windsor earned Acute Stroke Ready designation the same year.
