Press Release:

Raleigh     Yesterday, current Harnett County Commissioner and former Mayor of Dunn Abe Elmore passed away at the age of 86.

"Abe Elmore was a man who made better every person, organization, and community that he was a part of," said Rep. David Lewis. "Abe's contributions to our community are immeasurable. His modesty resulted in many taking for granted how much better our lives and our community are because of him. Abe Elmore cared and devoted himself to making our community more than it was. When others saw obstacles, Abe had a gift for seeing opportunity. I will miss his wit, wisdom, and genuine love for others and the community we all call home."

Elmore was selected to the North Carolina Republican Party Hall of Fame in 2009 in recognition for his outstanding record of service.

"Commissioner Elmore was a long-time public servant who always put the priorities of Harnett County and Dunn at the forefront of his focus," stated NCGOP Treasurer Jason Lemons, a Harnett County resident. "He was always accessible and you could count on him to make you smile. Abe's extensive list of achievements and dedication to his community will ensure his memory will forever be etched into the region's history."

Elmore, a graduate from Wake Forest University, served as the Mayor of Dunn for 16 years, first elected to the post in 1971. He remained heavily involved with Wake Forest since his graduation in 1955, contributing generously and working with other alumni to the point he received the Gene Hooks Achievement Award in 2014. Most recently, Commissioner Elmore received the M.H. "Jack" Brock Memorial Award this past January "in recognition of continued and exemplary dedication and service to local government as an elected county official." He was re-elected in 2018 to a second term on the Board of Commissioners this past January by a commanding 63-37 result.

Abe is survived by his wife, Jackie, and their four children.
