Northeast Elementary Celebrates Earth Day

Friday, May 04, 2012 was Earth Day at Northeast Elementary. Students in grades pre-kindergarten through second participated in a variety of events scheduled in an effort to promote an appreciation of the environment and things in nature. Children planted their own sunflower seeds with Debbie Poe, retired Northeast teacher, as she shared “Seed to Plant”. Students planted wheat or soy beans and learned where their food comes from with Mac Gibbs from the Hyde County Extension Agency. Melissa Nanny, with Potash Corporation, gave a presentation on fossils, bringing buckets of reject for the students to hunt through. A variety of live animals were on campus. Doug Lequire with Pettigrew State Park gave a presentation on snakes, turtles and frogs. Wesley Taylor, of Aurora, brought chickens and helped students understand the egg to chicken process, closing with “The Chicken Dance”. Students increased their knowledge of the life cycle of butterflies and other facts from volunteer Bob Paciocco of Washington. Carolyn Sleeper of Slatestone Studio shared pottery techniques using clay as one of nature’s resources. Earth Day ended with a Pamlico Joe and Clean Water Flo concert. Students and staff participated as they shared a variety of songs teaching children how to care for the earth.
Students learn about seeds and plants with retired Northeast teacher Ms. Debbie Poe.
