Gentlemen (Dear Commissioners, July 31, 2012) | Eastern North Carolina Now

Gentlemen:

Has the "Big Blue Blister of Debt" been placed with a professional Realtor? Has anything been done to price and market the building? What costs are now accruing form our continued ownership?

Will the Skills Center be put to any use? Will it be sold? Yesterday I attended a hospital board meeting at the Skills Center. It is occupied by a single secretary. Lights, air conditioning, landscaping, etc, for an enormous space that is occupied by one person seems to be a bit of a waste. In fact, it is a $40,000 overhead item before counting the staff salary.

Maybe the building should be mothballed until some actual use arises for the space.

EDC maintained a staff position, which was budgeted at roughly $50,000. Has that position been defunded? If the position still being funded, then what tasks are being performed?

The on going costs for the non-existence of the EDC seems to be $100,0000. Although, this is a substantial improvement over the $1.2 million the EDC cost the county in 2011, more cost management can be undertaken.

Has the EDC board completed the 2012 annual report as directed by the county commissioners at the March 19, 2012 EDC presentation?

Thank you,

Warren Smith

Don't confuse the SKILLS CENTER building with the big "BLUE" empty warehouse.

Let there be no doubt in anyone's mind, aside from upkeep and maintenance, the Skills Center (which some call the Taj Mahal of Beaufort County) is a costly venture. With over $40,000 going to Rent, Utilities and Maintainence, this has become a bottomless money pit. This $40,000 take into account other contracts that subsidize BCC-100 activities.

I finally got a peek at the massive, expensive copying machine that is hidden behind closed doors. Now we know what's behind DOOR #2!!! This hidden treasure is costing $1,000 mo. in rental fees.

How can having one County Employee justify $425 mo. in Cleaning fees? I'm referring to carpet cleaning. On the other hand this ONE employee is cleaning up with an excessive $50,000 salary for doing WHAT?

Then there is the matter of $1,800 mo. Rent.

This whole scene is a "BUDGET BUSTER".
