Sunday, November 11, 2012       Spotted Salamanders       2:00 pm

Expand your knowledge and assist a ranger in tracking down the rare spotted salamander. These secretive salamanders have been found within Goose Creek State Park!! This is very exciting because they are not known to live in the eastern part of our state. So any finds will be thoroughly documented and your name will be placed with the record. Meet in the Campground Parking Lot and be prepared to hike approximately 2 miles. We'll be rolling over logs and turning over leaves so please dress appropriately.

Sunday, November 18, 2012       Tar Kiln Hike       2:00 pm

How did North Carolina become known as the “Tar Heel State?” Come explore the history behind tar kilns and their important role in the naval stores industry. You will get a glimpse of the past when you come across real tar kilns like those common in Eastern North Carolina in the 1700’s and 1800’s. Meet at the Ivey Gut Parking Lot and dress appropriately for the weather. This is an easy 1˝ mile hike and will last approximately 1 hour.
