TRiO students give back at nursing home | Eastern North Carolina Now

Press Release:

WASHINGTON, N.C.     Beaufort County Community College TRiO Student Support Services students celebrated National TRiO Day 2022 with an "Operation Care - Thinking of You" service project. National TRiO Day commemorates the annual achievements of TRiO programs and focuses the nationwide attention on the needs of young people and adults aspiring to improve their lives and to the talent which will be wasted if that investment is not made. TRiO programs across the United States celebrate National TRIO Day as a national day of service. It allows students who benefit from the program to give back to their local communities through acts of service.

Residents of River Trace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Washington received care packages especially prepared by the BCCC TRIO scholars. This year scholars wrote "Thinking of You" cards, donated gift items and prepared gift bags for each resident of the center. TRiO scholar Victoria Anthony shared," I just want them to know that someone cares about them." Several scholars met TRIO Staff at the center to deliver the care packages to River Trace's activity director, Jerome Ward, who was eager to receive them.

TRiO is a set of federally funded college-based educational opportunity outreach programs that motivate and support students, including military veterans, first-generation college students, students with limited income, and students with disabilities. Currently serving more than 800,000 students from middle school through post-graduate study, TRiO provides academic tutoring, personal counseling, mentoring, financial guidance, and other supports necessary to promote college access, retention, and graduation. TRiO Day celebrates the lives these college access and success programs have transformed. TRiO Student Support Services has been at BCCC for over forty years and has served as a vital pipeline to opportunity for many students.
