Treasurer Folwell to Discuss Russia Assets During April Ask Me Anything Session | Eastern North Carolina Now

Turmoil in Town of Spring Lake on Agenda for Monthly Teleconference with Reporters

ENCNow
Press Release:

(Raleigh, N.C.)     State Treasurer Dale R. Folwell, CPA, is assuring North Carolinians that the state pension plan continues to maintain a strong financial position despite uncertainties in the market triggered by the Russian invasion of Ukraine and worsening inflation.

The treasurer will discuss the pension plan during his monthly Ask Me Anything conference call with reporters on Tuesday, April 5. The pension plan's portfolio includes a minimal amount of Russian-based investments.

Some politicians and pressure groups are calling for divestment of Russian assets. Treasurer Folwell instead has called on Congress to amend federal law to allow state pension plans to recover economic losses from Russia caused by President Vladimir Putin's deadly military action.

Treasurer Folwell also will discuss ongoing concerns with governmental operations and financial issues in the Cumberland County town of Spring Lake. A state audit uncovered more than a half-million dollars in wrongful and questionable spending by town officials, and government vehicles that appear to be missing and unaccounted for. Staff with the Local Government Commission, which the treasurer chairs, had to step in to fill some town positions last month in order to help get the town payroll processed.
