A Message to Voters of Beaufort County from Gary Carlton



    Sexual Orientation is a person's identity in relation to the gender to which they are sexually attracted.

    Sexual Orientation goes by many names.

• Gender Identity
• Gender Expression
• Gender Transition
• Gender Dysphoria

    Our School Administration would tell you that our schools do not get involved with influencing a child's gender sexual orientation. However, the Woke community will tell you that school staff and your child's peers provide important context for the socialization of young people and gender attitude and behavior. Woke elements in many school systems introduce gender identity lessons to our children as early as kindergarten. Certainly, teachers and administrators see conflicts between peers. Addressing these conflicts and bullying must be handled by teachers, but that certainly does not give them the authority to counsel students about their gender identity.

    Do we really want school staff counseling our children on their gender identity?

    This topic is confusing for children and discussion about gender identity is best handled by parents. Children grow up watching the interaction between their Mother and Father. The role of a Man and Woman in personal interaction is witnessed by children from their earliest days and the child begins to develop their own self- identity based on their observations.

    States have begun to address the important issue of teacher and administration involvement in gender identity discussions in the classroom.

    A Florida law has been adopted that prohibits lessons in K-3 classrooms about sexual orientation and gender identity. Montana, Tennessee, and Arkansas passed laws that require schools to give parents advance notice of lessons that touch on gender identity or sexual orientation and allow parents to opt their children out of these lessons.

    Again, if we ask our school administrators if gender identity is discussed in the classroom ore in one-on-one counseling sessions, they will certainly tell you that does not occur in our schools.

    My opinion is that this is not true.

    I believe that our School Board should be ahead of this issue and develop policies to ensure that this is not an issue that we would regret not taking a stand on NOW.
