More Fall 2022 Scholarship Recipients Announced as Semester Wraps Up

The Beaufort County Community College Foundation is proud to announce these scholarship recipients for the Fall 2022 semester. Registration is open for Spring 2023 courses starting January 5. This will be the final semester of the Beaufort Promise in its current form. Qualified students from Beaufort, Hyde, Tyrrell, and Washington Counties can still receive free tuition and fees beyond 2023. The application period for the associate degree nursing and the practical degree nursing programs closes on January 31, 2023.
Quentin Hatten, 29, received the Louise Terry Scholarship. The Robersonville resident is part of the criminal justice technology program. Hatten attended Farmville Central High School. He is the son of Henry Lee Wooten of Fountain and Shirelle Hatten of Farmville. He currently works at Minges Bottling Group as a merchandiser and plans to become an entrepreneur.
In celebration and memory of her sister's long and successful business career, Linda Lancaster established the Louise Terry Endowment in 2012.Preference is given to students in business administration and second consideration to BLET and criminal justice students. Students must demonstrate need and academic promise.
Jasmine Horton, 34, received the Dr. Nancy Alford Memorial Scholarship. The Kinston resident is part of the human services technology program. Horton attended West Craven High School and plans to obtain her Bachelor of Social Work. She currently works at ECU Health Medical Center as a mental health technician. The mother of one is the daughter of Malcolm and Judy Johnson of Kinston.
Established in 2018 by the BCCC community in memory of instructor Joseph Alford's mother, Dr. Nancy Alford, this scholarship provides educational opportunities for students demonstrating financial need. Dr. Nancy Boylan Alford was the owner and operator of Carriage House Psychological Associates in Roanoke Rapids. Dr. Alford and her husband Reverend John B. Alford Jr. spent 57 years together. The Alfords want to keep her memory alive and foster the students who feel a sense of purpose by helping others. Scholarships are made available, but not limited, to students in fields such as psychology, sociology, human services technology, and nursing.
Shonita Johnson, 31, received the Dr. Charles O. Boyette Scholarship. The Greenville resident is part of the nursing program. Johnson attended J. H. Rose High School. She currently works at ECU Health Medical Center. Johnson plans to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and become a traveling nurse.
Established in 2020, this endowment funds scholarship assistance for those students entering health related fields and needing assistance to pay for their education. Dr. Boyette served as the Beaufort County Community College Foundation Board Chair from 1985 to 2016. He had many professional and medical affiliations throughout his career and was admired and respected thorough the communities he served.
Shamika Rascoe, 38, received the Louise & Dorsey Welch Scholarship. The Washington resident is part of the early childhood education program. The mother of three is the daughter of Harvey Rascoe of Bertie County. She attended Bertie County High School and holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Elizabeth City State University. She currently works for Hertford County Public Schools as a nurse extender. Rascoe plans to graduate with an Associate in Applied Science in Early Childhood Education.
Established in 2001, the Welch scholarship memorializes a couple who made lifelong contributions to the community through their family business, Welch's Drugstore. Louise Welch was also a teacher. This scholarship is made available annually to a student who, after completing their initial course work at BCCC, plans to go on to earn a teaching degree. Recipients must maintain a 3.0 GPA to be eligible for this scholarship.
Sharon Raspberry, 44, received the Stephanie Zablocki Jones Memorial Scholarship. The Washington resident is part of the medical laboratory technology program. Raspberry plans to work in a lab and further her education. Raspberry has two children.
The Stephanie Zablocki Jones Memorial Scholarship provides financial support for Beaufort County Community College (BCCC) students in the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program, or other medical programs. Stephanie was a graduate of the BCCC MLT program and was a phlebotomist at the Leo G. Jenkins Cancer Center in Greenville, NC. She was lost from our family and community in 2006 while administering first aid at an accident scene on River Road near her home in Washington, NC. Stephanie love of the Washington community. She was the mother of three, a volunteer youth sports coach, and assistant Scoutmaster at Troop 99 in Washington. We hope this scholarship assistance will help others model Stephanie's academic achievement and community service; helping others with great skill, compassion and dedication.
Porsché St. Clair, 32, received the Dr. David & Terri Ann McLawhorn Scholarship. The Greenville resident is working toward an Associate in Arts. St. Clair earned her high school equivalency from Pitt Community College, and she holds an Associate in Applied Science in Medical Office Administration from Pitt Community College. The mother of three is the daughter of Mitchell St. Clair of Beaufort County and Barbara St. Clair of Greenville. She currently works at Trillium Health Resources as a member services agent. St. Clair plans to transfer to UNCG to obtain her a bachelor's degree in business.
Dr. David McLawhorn initiated this endowment in 2004. As president of BCCC from July of 2001 through May of 2012, Dr. McLawhorn wanted to create a fund that would supplement the work of the Foundation by providing scholarship to students who demonstrate need and academic promise.
Jameese Watson, 39, received the Douglas & Lou Branch Scholarship. The Windsor resident is part of the early childhood education career entry track program. Watson attended Bertie High School and currently works at T&J Keys Childcare as the director. The mother of two is the daughter of James and Joyce Williams of Windsor. Watson plans to own her own daycare center.
Established in 2019 in honor of the Branches and their struggles in finishing Mrs. Branch's education, this scholarship is awarded to a student demonstrating financial need and also enrolled in the Pirate Promise Program. Ms. Branch began her college career at Beaufort County Community College. She worked full time and attended BCCC at night before completing all her transfer courses to continue her education at ECU. Ms. Branch ultimately had to quit her daytime employment to further her education and successfully received her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from ECU.
Shaterra Williams, 29, received the James & Hannah Bagwell Scholarship. The Burlington resident is part of the business administration program. Williams attended John A. Holmes High School and holds a Bachelor of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences from North Carolina Central University. Williams currently runs two businesses, Shaped by You Lingerie and Shaterra's Spiritual Journey. The mother of one is the daughter of Anthony Brownridge and Tywanda Holley of Edenton. Williams plans to run her own business.
Established in 1997, this endowment funds annual scholarships in memory of William Riley and Rosa Watson Roberson and William "Bill" Roberson Bagwell. The recipients of these awards must be high school, or GED graduates enrolled in a degree, diploma, or certificate program, must demonstrate financial need, and must show academic promise.
