Jeremy Renner's condition following a snowplow accident is reportedly far more severe than has been previously reported, according to friends of the actor interviewed by Radar Online.

Renner was injured over the New Year's weekend in an attempt to help a stranded family member when his 14,330-pound snowcat machine ran over him. Renner was transported by helicopter from his home in Reno, Nevada, to Renown Regional Medical Center, the region's only trauma center, where it was determined he had suffered blunt chest trauma. A representative for Renner stated at the time, "He has returned from surgery and will remain in the intensive care unit in critical but stable condition."

Sources told Radar Online that Renner's road to recovery could take two years to complete and that Renner "almost bled out" at the scene of the accident.

"It's much worse than anyone knows. Jeremy is very aware of the fact that he almost died out there," one source said. "The right side of Jeremy's chest was crushed, and his upper torso had collapsed. He also had a bad head wound that was bleeding and a leg injury."

"He knew he was in bad shape and that he might not make it out of this," another source added.

A third insider stated, "Word is the damage to Jeremy's chest was so substantial it had to be reconstructed in surgery." Another source said Renner had undergone multiple surgeries.

"So far, he's had two surgeries and he will likely require more in the weeks ahead on his leg," the source said. "Doctors tend to space out operations to allow time for the body's natural healing process to kick in, and that's the case here."

"Jeremy's doing okay," one source opined. "He's pretty doped up and he's got tubes to help him breathe, but he's a fighter, and he's determined to get through this."

"If anyone knows Jeremy, he is a fighter and doesn't mess around," Renner's sister Kym told People Magazine last week. "He is crushing all the progress goals. We couldn't feel more positive about the road ahead."

Renner has been posting progress messages on Instagram; on Jan. 3 he wrote, "Thank you all for your kind words. 🙏. I'm too messed up now to type. But I send love to you all."

On January 5, he updated the public by showing his sister massaging his head while saying it was a "spa moment to lift my spirits." On January 6 he wrote, "Thank you renowned medical ICU team for beginning this journey."
