BCCC Foundation Announces Louise R. Lester & Other Scholarship Recipients | Eastern North Carolina Now

    The Beaufort County Community College Foundation is proud to announce the following scholarship recipients. Matthew Bullock, Amanda Coombs, Shonita Johnson, and Tess Keel all received the Louise R. Lester Foundation Scholarship. The summer semester starts on May 16. The Beaufort Promise Scholarship does not cover summer semesters, but students can apply for other scholarships. They must first fill out a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

    Founded in 2001, the Louise R. Lester Foundation builds on the charitable works of Mrs. Louise Robertson Lester. Mrs. Lester was a native of Martinsville, Va., and attended Bentley Business College, Gassaway Business College, and, later in life, Patrick Henry Community College and Averett College. She was an accomplished artist, producing beautiful paintings and poetry. The Louise R. Lester Foundation seeks to effect positive change in the communities and lives of the people who are served through its philanthropic support. They seek to build effective relationships with grantees through a willingness to understand the challenges they face. Scholarships are available for students facing financial challenges to continue their college education.

    Matthew Bullock, 18, is a Chocowinity resident who is working on his Associate in Applied Science in Agribusiness Technology. Bullock attended Southside High School. He currently works in landscaping.

    Ashley Coffield, 28, received the Frances M. Barnes Memorial Trust Scholarship. Coffield is a Williamston resident and a criminal justice technology student. She is the wife of Matthew Coffield and a mother of one. She attended Riverside High School and holds certifications in Basic Law Enforcement Technology and School Resource Officer. She currently works as a school resource officer at the Martin County Sheriff's Office and teaches archery to students at E.J. Hayes Elementary School. She is a first-generation college student who plans to transfer to a four-year university.

    Frances M. Barnes Trust Memorial scholarships are awarded to Martin County curriculum and continuing educations attending BCCC who intend to reside and work in Martin County upon course completion. Students must meet respective scholarship guidelines for the curriculum or continuing education program of study, show satisfactory academic progress and demonstrate financial need.

    Amanda Coombs, 41, received the Louise R. Lester Foundation Scholarship. Coombs is a nursing student. She attended New Bern High School and holds degrees in sonography and environmental science. She is the wife of Herbert Coombs and a mother of three. She currently works at Fulcher's Seafood, LLC and plans to work as a nurse.

    Kristie Dunn, 38, received the John & Geneva Morgan & the Levi Scott McGowan Scholarships. Dunn is a Washington resident who is part of the associate degree nursing program. Dunn attended Washington High School. She is the daughter of Tony Keech and Eleanor Jo Woolard of Washington, the wife of Robert Dunn Jr., and a mother of two. Dunn plans to become a nurse at ECU Health.

    Established in 2016 by the Beaufort County Mental Health Association, the John & Geneva Morgan Scholarship represents the tireless efforts of John and Geneva Morgan as they advocated for citizens affected by mental illness. Geneva Morgan's nursing career spanned 40 years of service providing care to the pediatric population of the community. In addition to administering to the needs of the pediatric patient, she focused upon alleviating the stigma associated with mental illness. It was the care, compassion and wellbeing for the often-forgotten patient that gave her the most joy. John became her partner in advocacy after retirement. Scholarships are provided to senior level nursing students with a minimum GPA of 2.5. Student must be a Beaufort County resident and participate in community events honoring the Morgan legacy of community involvement.

    Established in 2018, the Levi Scott McGowan Scholarship provides financial support to an academically capable, second year Beaufort County nursing student who demonstrates financial need. This scholarship is to assist with tuition.

    Blake Fuell, 18, received the James W. Chestnutt & the Jody Parrish scholarship. The Washington resident is working toward an Associate in Science. Fuell attended Northside High School. He currently works at Pizza Inn as a cook and plans to earn a bachelor's degree at East Carolina University.

    Established by Jim Chesnutt, a longtime member of the Board of Trustees for BCCC, this endowment was established to award scholarships to a rising sophomore seeking to transfer, on completion of an associate degree, to East Carolina University and enroll in a degree program.

    Margaret "Margie" Holder established the Jody Parrish Endowment in 2012 to memorialize her beloved son Jody. Margie was also an early childhood instructor at BCCC, and during her tenure, raised funds to help several BCCC students. Scholarships are awarded to students with academic promise and demonstrated financial need.

    Shonita Johnson, 31, received the Louise R. Lester Foundation Scholarship. Johnson is a part of the nursing program. Johnson attended J. H. Rose High School. She currently works at Vidant Medical Center. Johnson plans to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and become a Traveling Nurse.

    Tess Keel, 21, received the Louise R. Lester Foundation Scholarship. Keel is part of the nursing program. She attended South Creek High School. She currently works at C&G Used Cars as an office assistant and plans to work as a registered nurse.

    Emily McCrary, 38, received the Harold & Louise Lane Scholarship. McCrary is a Greenville resident and pre-nursing student who plans to work as a nurse. McCrary works as a nursing assistant at ECU Health, and she is part of the Wintergreen Parent/Teacher Association. She is the daughter of Jan and Alec Parker, the wife of Justin McCrary, and a mother of two. She attended T.C. Roberson High School and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.

    Established in 1998 in memory of Harold Alton Lane, Jr., and in honor of Constance Lane Howard, by their parents Harold Lane, Sr. and his wife Louise, this endowment provides annual scholarships to one or more students in the nursing and or an associate degree program.

    Victoria Nicholls, 21, received the Louise & Dorsey Welch Scholarship. Nicholls is a Washington resident working toward an Associate in Science. She is the daughter of David Nicholls. Nicholls attended Washington High School and plans to transfer to a university so she can teach and help people. She currently works at Food Lion.

    Established in 2001, the Welch scholarship memorializes a couple who made lifelong contributions to the community through their family business, Welch's Drugstore. Louise Welch was also a teacher. This scholarship is made available annually to a student who, after completing their initial course work at BCCC, plans to go on to earn a teaching degree. Recipients must maintain a 3.0 GPA to be eligible for this scholarship.

    Mackenzie Sparks, 18, received the James Franklin & Hannah Bagwell Scholarship. Sparks is a human services technology student who plans to work in substance abuse therapy. Sparks attended Southside High School and is a first-generation college student. She is the daughter of Natasha and Clenon Sparks.

    Established in 1997, this endowment funds annual scholarships in memory of William Riley and Rosa Watson Roberson and William "Bill" Roberson Bagwell. The recipients of these awards must be high school or GED graduates enrolled in a degree, diploma, or certificate program, must demonstrate financial need and show academic promise.

    Nautica Whitley, 27, received the James Franklin & Hannah Bagwell Scholarship. Whitley, is a Greenville resident and a first-generation college student. The mother of one attended Washington High School. She currently works as a teaching assistant. (Not pictured)

    Jmiaya Wright, 24, received the James Franklin & Hannah Bagwell Scholarship. Wright is a New Bern resident working toward a Associate in Applied Science in Information Technology: Information Systems. She attended West Craven High School and holds a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. The mother of one is the wife of Valon Hemby and the daughter of Naoli West. Wright plans to work as an analyst in information systems.

    Established in 1997, this endowment funds annual scholarships in memory of William Riley and Rosa Watson Roberson and William "Bill" Roberson Bagwell. The recipients of these awards must be high school or GED graduates enrolled in a degree, diploma, or certificate program, must demonstrate financial need and show academic promise.

    Aquisa Woolard, 49, is a resident of Greenville. Woolard is a barber student. She attended Washington High School. Woolard currently works at Thermofisher as a team leader. (Not pictured.)

    BCCC Foundation General Scholarships are awarded to students in any program of study who demonstrate academic excellence and financial need for tuition and textbooks.

    Christian Woolard, 19, is a resident of Grimesland. Woolard is a barber student. She attended Southside High School.
