Treasurer Folwell Sticking to Goal of Protecting State Employee Benefits | Eastern NC Now

State Health Plan Rate Decision Will Be Focus of Monthly Ask Me Anything Q&A

ENCNow
Press Release:

(Raleigh, N.C.)     State Treasurer Dale R. Folwell, CPA, will discuss an important decision he and the State Health Plan Board of Trustees made recently to help public workers afford health care coverage when he holds his monthly Ask Me Anything Q&A with reporters on Tuesday, Aug. 1.

Health care is among the valuable benefits that draw people into government service. Treasurer Folwell has made it a priority during his two terms in office to safeguard, sustain and improve health care benefits for state workers. He has intentionally made preserving family premiums without increases a prominent feature of that goal. The State Health Plan is self-funded.

On July 27 Treasurer Folwell and the Board of Trustees voted to maintain active State Health Plan members' premiums at current rates into the 2024 benefit year that begins Jan. 1. In addition, the Trustees voted to freeze premiums for Medicare-eligible members on the Humana Group Medicare Advantage Plans.

Also on the agenda for discussion is the July 27 Supreme Court decision to block a lower court's ruling that was holding up construction of the Mountain Valley Pipeline. The pipeline will carry natural gas from West Virginia to Virginia, and a proposed extension of the pipeline would serve North Carolina.

Tuesday's Q&A will mark the 79th consecutive month Treasurer Folwell has offered media representatives the innovative opportunity to interview him on topics of their choosing.

The State Health Plan is a division of the Department of State Treasurer. It provides health care coverage to more than 740,000 teachers, state employees, retirees, current and former lawmakers, state university and community college personnel, and their dependents.
