As solar boondoggle cracks, how many local solar farms will be left in limbo? | Eastern NC Now

how many landowners will get stuck with the cleanup?

ENCNow

"Green energy" has always been a world of grift pushed by Democrats.  We first saw that with the Solyndra scandal, but the tempo of economic failure and bankruptcy is increasing among players in the solar industry.  Losing even some of the vast corrupt subsidies of Biden's Green New Deal ("Inflation Reductions Act") is likely to be the final nail in the coffin for many.

The usual practice in the solar industry is to have one company build a solar "farm" and then at some point sell it to an LLC with no assets other than the solar panels on leased land.  Many counties, including Beaufort, do not require those who build those facilities to put up a bond or other deposit to guarantee a site cleanup when the projects ceases to be functional.  The landowner might get stuck with that or so might local governments.  The implosion of the solar industry may hasten the day that arrives.

To make matters worse, the clapped out solar panels constitute hazardous waste that may be difficult and expensive to dispose of.  These issues are usually not explained to farmers and other landowners who are conned into leasing land for solar facilities.

State law gives counties authority to enact solar and wind ordinances to set standards and requirements for solar and wind "farms". Beaufort County has a rather weak solar ordinance but, as far as I am aware, no wind ordinance at all. It is in these ordinances that a bond for the total cleanup of the sites ought to be required of the original builder of the facility. Many wind ordinances also restrict how close they can be to occupied buildings including schools and homes.

State law also makes wind turbines and solar panels largely exempt from local property taxes, stiffing counties and shifting the burden to other taxpayers. This is a very good reason to adopt very strict wind and solar ordinances to encourage these things to be built somewhere else rather than here.

Sadly it will most likely be we the taxpayers that have to pay to clean up the toxic mess.
