Tansey Topics: A weekly look at what's happening at BCCC | Eastern North Carolina Now

Our campus is a busy place today! Solo circumnavigator Tania Aebi is speaking to BCCC students, faculty, staff and alumni on her around-the-world sailing adventure. Thanks to Foundation Director Judy Jennette and her team for arranging this interesting event. Also today, the American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges is holding a day-long workshop in our new Developmental Math Lab. The conference is focused on integrating technology in teaching and learning. BCCC cosponsored the event with Pitt Community College. Lead Math Instructor Kimberly Mullis said this was a great opportunity to work with a national organization and a sister institution to bring fresh ideas to the math classroom. Thanks to Kimberly and her team for bringing this event to BCCC. We also are hearing today from Elizabeth Self, executive director of Audit Services for the N.C. Community College System on funding and audit procedures. Thanks to Lou Stout, director of Occupational Extension, and her team for arranging this visit.

Here's some of what happened at BCCC during the past week:

    • BCCC's Senior Staff heard a report this week on Information Technology's efforts to move forward with a plan for off-site hosting for Blackboard. Negotiations are under way with the effort that will not only free space on BCCC's servers but will also provide the students and faculty with a stable environment for the learning management system. Thanks to Information Technology Director Art Richard and Learning Resources Director Penny Sermons and their teams for work on this plan.

    • About 80 students in night classes attended a social to mark the start of the holiday season. You can see a photo of this on BCCC's Facebook page. Thanks to the Student Government Association and Theresa Edwards, student activities coordinator for arranging this event.

    • Active Shooter Training is now available via an Internet link and a PowerPoint presentation that was emailed to you this week. The training is for those who missed the training sessions in August or were not employed here at BCCC in time to attend. You will need to view a video at mms://media.beaufortccc.edu/bb/Police/The_First_20_Minutes.wmv, view the PowerPoint presentation and complete a quiz (This information was sent to you in an email earlier this week by Director of Human Resources Emily Woolard). This training is mandatory for all BCCC employees. Thanks very much to Emily and Interim Chief of Police Ernie Coleman for their efforts in making this available to our recently-hired employees.

    • Financial auditor Amy Evans with the Office of the State Auditor will be on campus next week in Room 103 of Building 1. If you have any financial concerns regarding the college, please feel free to stop by and talk with her.

    • And the winners are. . .BCCC's Travel Study Group drew the winning tickets in their most recent raffle last week. Cittaly Lopez of Belhaven won the first-prize airline ticket; Joy McRoy of Chocowinity, the $100 gas card, and BCCC student Fatima Shamseldin of Pinetown, the spa treatment. The group raised $757, surpassing their goal of $500. They are planning a silent auction Dec. 4 and 5 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Lounge of Building 9 as an additional fund-raiser. The BCCC Staff Association drew the names of the winners in the Butterball portion of its fall raffle  -  Peggy Rouse of Washington and BCCC's own Cecelia Scott won a Thanksgiving turkey and a ham, respectively. Tickets for the Basketball portion of the Staff Association's fund-raiser will remain on sale through Dec. 10.

    • Don't forget to support the toy drive through Friday, Dec. 6, conducted by BCCC's chapter of Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society. Donate a new, unwrapped toy for children from two months to five years of age. Boxes are located in Buildings 1, 5, 9, 11 and 12.

    • Personnel and personal notes: Condolences to Brenda Rogers on the recent death of her grandmother and get well wishes go to Lucy Lawrence.

And in the coming weeks, watch for the following:

Nov. 26  -  Student Government Association meeting, noon, Student Lounge, Building 9.

    Nov. 27  -  Student/Faculty Vacation.

    Nov. 28-29  -  Happy Thanksgiving!
