lnza Carol Mackenzie | Eastern NC Now

    lnza Carol Mackenzie passed away peacefully on August 4, 2026, in Washington, North Carolina at the age of 87. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2 PM Saturday, September 5, 2026 at the First Presbyterian Church in Washington.

    lnza was born in Oceanside, NY to Ivar and Christina Areskog on December 22, 1938, and grew up in Baldwin, NY where her father was a bank executive. She graduated from Baldwin High School, aspired to become a nurse, and graduated from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Brooklyn, NY. The choice was promptly made to become an Operating Room nurse, because, in her words, "the patients could not argue with you". She married Scott Mackenzie, a Merchant Marine engineering officer, on August 27, 1960, and would have celebrated their 66th Anniversary this year.

    Once married for a while, lnza "retired" from nursing to focus on raising two children, son Kenneth and daughter Adriene while perfecting the skills to smoothly relocate their home to wherever her husband's career took them. She adjusted to living in places she had not planned on, saw parts of the world she never dreamed of, and successfully launched a completely different career for herself in a foreign country. She became the Manager of an H & R Block Executive Tax Service office in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. In her spare time she coached swim teams, officiated at swimming competitions and helped the kids deliver newspapers after snowstorms. After moving to Washington, lnza became active with the Presbyterian Women Circles, knitting for others and joined the United States Power Squadrons with her husband. Together they conveyed their sailboat cruising experiences to teach that organization's members boating skills and safety practices.

    lnza is preceded in death by her mother, Christina Areskog, her father, Ivar Areskog and her sister Martha Karen Lunde. She is survived by her husband, Scott Mackenzie, son Kenneth James Mackenzie, (Kim), daughter Adriene Carol Mackenzie, (Eric Obermayer), grandsons Hunter Mackenzie, River Mackenzie, Jagger Mackenzie, Zarbian Obermayer and granddaughters Mackenzie Obermayer and Posy Mackenzie.
