The Raleigh City Council has halted discussion about its outdoor seating ordinance until August, but overcrowding and public safety issues must be addressed, Assistant City Manager Marchell Adams David told a June 18 meeting of the city's hospitality committee.

A discussion Tuesday of alternative plans to regulate outdoor dining at Raleigh's Law and Public Safety Committee saw city staffers agree that safety and "vibrancy" concerns with the Outdoor Dining Ordinance exist largely because of weak enforcement of rules.

Since Raleigh legalized food trucks a year ago, 18 have been permitted to operate in 11 locations. After receiving only positive feedback about the roaming restaurants, city council now is considering opening up a few more places for them to park.
