To the north of where we stayed at Barrier Island Station is a tract of oceanfront land owned by the US Army Corps of Engineers' Field Research Facility used to better understand the effects of the energy within the ocean; most notably waves. This 173 acre compound does allow the public, at 10:00 am each weekday, to take a walk on their magnificently sturdy concrete pier, which is a major component of this facility: Above.
