News Release:

WASHINGTON, N.C.     North Carolina State Senator Bill Cook (R-District 1) announced on Monday, Jan. 6, that he will seek re-election during a press conference held on the Beaufort County Courthouse steps.

North Carolina Senate District 1 consists of Beaufort, Hyde, Dare, Currituck, Camden, Pasquotank, Perquimans, and Gates counties. Senator Cook is finishing up his first term as a State Senator after being elected in 2012. Previously, he served one term in the N.C. House of Representatives. "After careful consideration I have decided to seek the honor of serving the people of Senate District 1 for a second term," Sen. Cook said.

Senator Cook highlighted the work that he and the General Assembly have been able to accomplish. "This past year we reformed the tax code in North Carolina. We reduced the personal income tax from the past maximum of 7.75 % to a flat 5.8% in 2014 and 5.75% the following year," he said. "This year the corporate income tax is reduced to 6% from 6.9% and gradually it will fall to 3% in 2017. We capped the gas tax and eliminated the death tax. In the first three years of this new tax system, taxes will be cut by over $1 billion."

State Senate leader Phil Berger Sr. gave high marks to Sen. Cook on his decision to seek re-election. "Bill Cook has been a tireless and effective advocate for Eastern North Carolina, and I'm thrilled he's decided to seek re-election to the State Senate," said Senate Leader Phil Berger. "We all - but especially the people of Senate District 1 - have a better place to live and work because of Bill's leadership."

Senator Cook finished his remarks by articulating his goals for his second term. "Together we have accomplished a great deal but more is required here in the East to improve education, promote the creation of jobs, build needed infrastructure and protect our Constitutional rights," he said. "In my second term I will focus on giving teachers a raise, building required bridges and roads, reducing taxes and unneeded regulation, and stopping the erosion of our religious and second amendment rights."
